The rack-and-pinion locomotive exhales a long groan as it crests another bend above Coonoor. Below us, tea terraces cascade in irregular steps down to the valley floor, catching the last horizontal light of the afternoon. We are at roughly 6,000 feet, aboard the Nilgiri Mountain Railway — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been grinding up these slopes since 1908.

Most people come for the scenery. That's fair. The 46-kilometre journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty is legitimately beautiful — one of those routes that reminds you why train travel exists. But what I came for was the mechanism. Specifically, the Abt rack system: a serrated steel rail laid between the running rails that a toothed pinion gear on the locomotive engages to prevent slipping on gradients that would defeat any conventional adhesion engine.

The rack section begins at Kallar, gradient 1 in 12.28. The locomotive — a Swiss-built X Class steam engine in daily revenue service — shifts from wheel-on-rail friction to tooth-on-rack engagement with a clunk you feel in your sternum.

There are only three rack railways still operating in India. The Nilgiri is the last using steam traction for its steepest sections. This is not heritage theatre. This is the scheduled service. The same trains, the same timetable, the same ancient Swiss engines — because nothing else can do the job reliably at this gradient.

The Locomotives

The X Class engines were built by SLM (Schweizerische Lokomotivfabrik, Winterthur) between 1914 and 1952. Southern Railway, which operates this route, has kept a small fleet serviceable through sheer institutional commitment. Spare parts are machined locally. Knowledge is passed person to person. There is no manual for keeping a 70-year-old Swiss rack locomotive running in Tamil Nadu — only the accumulated memory of the workshops at Coonoor.

I spent an hour at the Coonoor loco shed talking to a fitter who has worked on these engines for over two decades. He spoke about the rack pinion teeth the way a chef talks about a good knife: with matter-of-fact precision and obvious affection. "The tolerances are very tight," he said, holding up a worn tooth profile he was using for reference. "If you get it wrong, the engine slips. On this gradient, that is not acceptable."

The Journey

From Mettupalayam at 326 metres, the line climbs to Ooty at 2,203 metres — a rise of nearly 1,900 metres in 46 kilometres. The adhesion section from Mettupalayam to Kallar (roughly 16 km) runs through dry deciduous forest and across a series of river bridges. Then the rack section begins: 30 kilometres of continuous climbing through shola forest, tea estates, and the occasional cloud bank that rolls in without warning and turns the world white for ten minutes before dissolving.

The train runs at a maximum speed of 13 km/h on the rack section. This is not a flaw. It is precisely correct. Any faster and the ride would become uncomfortable; any slower and the schedule would collapse. The pacing forces a different mode of observation. You notice the moss on the retaining walls. You hear the waterfall before you see it. The guy across from you finally puts his phone down.

What It Costs to Keep Running

UNESCO listing in 2005 brought attention but also complications. Tourism pressure increased. Maintenance funding remained inconsistent. There have been years when engine availability dropped to two or three serviceable locomotives from a fleet of ten. Diesel pilot engines now assist on some services. Purists call this compromise. Engineers call it keeping the line open.

The real question for the Nilgiri isn't whether it's beautiful — it obviously is. The question is whether Indian Railways has the institutional will to maintain a technically demanding, economically marginal heritage asset for another generation. The answer, based on what I saw at Coonoor shed, is cautiously yes. But it requires people who care deeply about something that most of the system has moved past.

That is, perhaps, the most Indian transportation story there is.
